During 2017, after volunteering for different organisations, we noticed there no organised cultural or community representation of the Dominican Community in the UK and especially in London.
After an invitation from other community groups to represent our country, Dominican Republic in the streets of London, in the famous New Year Parade it was an opportunity to be visible and present. Three weeks before the event, a short time to get ready and considering they did not have yet a dance group or traditional clothing. One thing we did have for sure was interest and desire to participate and on the first of January 2018 The Dominican Republic was in the street dancing and showing millions of people in the streets of London and via the TV around the world our traditional dance and vibrant music.
A call was made to the Dominican community in London to listen, share interest and organize ideas to start a dominican group in the UK. In the meeting it was clear that celebrating who we are and sharing that with others was very important. So we started to organize activities and invite friends and members of other communities to celebrate with us. It was also an opportunity for us to celebrate and contribute to the celebration of other cultures too.
